Mr. and Mrs. Simpleton are shopping for carpet for their living room and dining room. Their living room is 21 feet by 15 feet and their dining room is 12 feet by 9 feet. They have looked at two different priced carpets. One for $14.95 a square yard installed and another for $19.99 a square yard installed. How much would they save by choosing the cheaper carpet? What are some other things besides money that they should consider before making their choice? After you find out how much carpet they need, figure out the savings in one calculation. Explain.

  1. First, you have to find the total area of the living room and the dining room. Because each square of carpet is measured in yards, you have to convert all the feet into yards. 21/3=7 and 15/3=5. After you multiply 7 and 5, you get the area of the living room, which is 35 square yards. 12/3=4 and 9/3=3. The product of 4 and 3 is 12, which is the area of the dining room. Add 35 and 12 together which is 47. This is your total square yards of carpet.

To find out how much you save per square yard, subtract 14.95 from 19.99. The difference is 5.04. Now you can find out how much you save on the carpet. $5.04 multiplied by 47 square yards is $236.88. You save $236.88 when using the cheaper carpet.

Besides thinking about money, the Simpletons should consider color, patterns, quality, allergies, and personal preference.

As I have found in the first paragraph, they need 47 square yards of carpet. To calculate the savings, multiply $5.04, how much you save per square yard, and 47, the total amount of square yards needed to be covered. The Simpletons will save $236.88 on the carpet if they choose the cheaper carpet.
