The lot that Dana is buying for her new one story house is 35 yards by 50 yards. Dana’s

house plans show that her house will cover 1,600 square feet of land. What percent of Dana’s

lot will not be covered by the house? Explain your reasoning.

  1. To find the percentage of the lot of land not covered by Dana's house, we'll need to first figure out the area of the lot. We have to multiply 35 yards by 50 yards, which, put in the way of multiplying 50 by 30 and 50 by 5, will equal 1,750 square yards. Converted to equal the same measurement of the house, it would be 5,250 feet. Now, we have to find the percentage. We divide 1600 by 5250, which, rounded up, equals about 30 percent. As a result, we subtract 30 from 100, and get 70 percent of the lot not occupied by Dana's house.
